About

We at Simbad’s Birds & Pets, are totally committed to aviculture, seven days a week, no short cuts. Our quality control begins at our farm, where the breeding birds are housed in hurricane proof buildings according to species; provided with full spectrum lighting and sprinkler systems for bathing. The cages go through the walls to the outside, so the birds can get sunshine and/or rain whenever they please. They are fed everyday with the healthiest and most balanced of diets.
We let most of our parent birds incubate and hatch their babies, which are pulled by us from their nests at approximately three weeks of age, at which time we bring them to the store’s nurseries. Here, they are cared for around the clock 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, no short cuts.

They are cultured, vaccinated and veterinary checked periodically, until they are weaned and ready to go to your home. We use the best organic baby formula on the market, we do not use syringes, but baby bottles. It is a labor which we love doing, and takes an average of three months to conclude. The bird is fed and loved by our entire Staff, assuring you to receive a well adjusted and emotionally balanced bird.

RAISING OUR BABIES HERE AT THE STORE NURSERIES ALLOWS US TO GUARANTEE BIRDS WHO WILL MAKE EXCELLENT PETS, FOR THEY GROW UP WITHOUT PREJUDICE TO SEX, COLOR OR LOOKS.

Since 1980, we have been involved in the exotic bird trade. Our first trip was to the jungles of Bolivia from which we imported an assortment of exotic birds into a private Quarantine Facility. This quarantine, supervised by the U.S.D.A., and the Fish & Wildlife Service was completed and released for sale to the American pet market, launching us into a lifelong love affair with exotic birds.

For the next 7 years, we successfully imported birds from all over the world. As we gained experience and knowledge of their proper care, we started to delve into captive breeding of some of the more popular species.

In the summer of 1987, we took over a 900 sq. ft. corner at 7201 Bird Road and Simbad’s Bird House was opened to the public on May 1st, 1987 – specializing in selling birds, cages and accessories only.

In 1991, we purchased the lease to the auto parts business next door and expanded the store to 3,000 sq. ft., renovating and creating a new way of merchandising and properly displaying baby exotic birds in temperature controlled nurseries. Our vision took us to the cutting edge of aviculture and our store and husbandry practices have become featured as the standards by which the pet trade individuals get certified through seminars nationwide.

Complimenting the store, in 1991, we purchased a 5-acre farm in the Redlands, on which we house our breeding collection.

In 1993, the National Geographical Society, doing a special report on the black market of birds, featured us and our store as the place to buy healthy and legal exotic birds in the United States.

In early 1995, we purchased the current property at 7201 – 7209 Bird Road, which included an antique shop as a tenant. At the end of 1995, we bought out the tenant’s lease and again expanded the store. This time to a total of 5,000 sq. ft.

Our business continues to be very rewarding in many different ways. We enjoy sharing the experience of life’s process with the public by showing how baby birds are raised in captivity and by serving our community with presentations in libraries and schools.
